Possible E-Cig Lawsuit Cases Rise, As E-Cigarette Explosion Causes Car Fire

July 24, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on the alleged cause of most e-cigarette explosions. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has indicated previously that in most e-cig-related explosions, the lithium-ion batteries have been the cause. According to FEMA, they tend to overheat due to an overload of voltage and can then cause an explosion. The agency has also indicated that 80% of all reported explosions occurred while the device was charging.

One such instance of an exploding e-cigarette causing significant damage has been reported by a local Chicago news station, WGNTV.com. WGNTV.com reported that a fire had broken out in a Chevy Trailblazer parked in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Before firefighters arrived at the scene, the blaze spread to another parked vehicle. Both cars were significantly damaged. Upon further investigation, officials discovered a very charred e-cig in the center console of the Trailblazer which supported the hypothesis that the fire started because of the defective e-cig device igniting in the vehicle.

Attorney Marc Freund of Lipsig, Shapey, Manus, & Moverman commented on the late-April blaze stating that he is relieved that the owner was not in the vehicle at the time the device ignited, as other e-cig users have been.

This particular instance is the first explosion of an e-cig in the state of Illinois and is one of the 77 that have been reported so far this year. This year’s total of 77 already exceeds that of the total of explosions from 2014 and 2015, 47 and 38, respectively. The very sharp upturn in explosions in the past couple of years has caused concern among e-cig users about the safety of the devices, as well as the safety of the charger and the lithium-ion batteries used to power and charge them.
