Randall Miller’s “Bottle Shock” Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary at Sundance
Celebrated independent film chronicled the unlikely rise of California wine as a global gourmet phenomenon

The celebrated independent film “Bottle Shock,” directed by Randall Miller, marked the 10th anniversary of its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. The 2008 film chronicled the unlikely rise of California wines as a global gourmet phenomenon, besting the French in a notorious 1976 blind taste test in Paris. The film’s cast included Alan Rickman, Chris Pine and Bill Pullman.
“I was drawn to the story of the famous ‘Judgement of Paris’ blind taste test of California wines,” said Miller. “It reminded me so much of what it takes to make a great indie film. You have to believe in your dreams and make the impossible happen.”
Written by Miller’s wife and producing partner, Jody Savin, “Bottle Shock” is set in 1976, when Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman), a snobby wine sommelier from Paris visits the Napa Valley to take the best he can find to Paris for a blind taste test against French wine. There, he meets Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman), who is in deep financial trouble with his Chateau Montelena winery. The film explores Barrett’s strained relationship with his hippie son, Bo (Chris Pine) and his foreman Gustavo (Freddy Rodriquez), a Mexican farmworker’s son secretly making his own wine.
Miller and Savin have blazed a successful trail in the perilous world of independent filmmaking. Initially, frustrated with the types of films he was being offered as a director, Miller and Savin invested their own money into the 2005 film “Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing and Charm School.” The idea came from a short film Miller had made as a student at AFI, based on his Pasadena childhood.
The pair then produced such notable independent films as “Nobel Son,” “Savannah,” and CBGB. Prior to making independent films, Miller enjoyed a busy career in television. His directing credits include such shows as “Thirtysomething,” “Northern Exposure” and “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.” Fans can follow Randall Miller on Twitter.
