Recent $5 Million Settlement May Give Hint To Cost Of All J&J’s Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit Settlements

April 22, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a $5 million settlement for Johnson & Johnson that may shed light on how much the company can expect to pay in legal costs. According to Bloomberg, the $5 million settlement that was made part of public record may indicate how much Johnson & Johnson will have to pay to resolve the claims. The company is still facing more than 46,000 mesh cases, the article said.

Transvaginal mesh is an implantable material typically used to treat incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. It is usually made from non-absorbable synthetic polypropylene and is used to support bulging organs in cases of pelvic organ prolapse or to support the urethra in cases of stress urinary incontinence. The device was approved by the FDA in 1996 for use in stress urinary incontinence procedures and then in 2002 for treatment of pelvic organ prolapse. Since the devices have been used in thousands of surgeries, the FDA has issued multiple warnings about them and reclassified them as ‘high risk.’

Johnson & Johnson is among several companies that manufacture transvaginal mesh. Other companies include C.R. Bard, Boston Scientific, Cook Medical and Coloplast Corp. Manufacturers of the mesh have recently come under fire after plaintiffs have alleged that their devices are defective and cause severe side effects. Those alleged side effects include organ perforation, bleeding, infection, vaginal scarring, vaginal shrinkage, severe pelvic or vaginal pain, inability to engage in sexual intercourse and neuromuscular problems.

As these cases are expected to accumulate, lawyers at Banville Law are working to ensure that those individuals who have been treated with transvaginal mesh are able to explore their legal rights fully. Qualifying individuals may be entitled to legal action and substantial financial compensation. The firm is currently offering free case evaluations for interested parties.
