Facebook has become an essential part of owning a business according to Borrell Associates. In a report recently released by them, it’s been revealed that 80 percent of businesses now maintain a Facebook page, and of those, 62 percent buy Facebook ads. This amounts to over 2.5 million businesses in the United States purchasing ad space on Facebook, and spending about $1500 annually for it. The survey consisted of a mix of American businesses, including a mix of large and small businesses, with advertising budgets ranging to more than $100,000 annually. 85 percent of those surveyed reported to actively use at least one social media website, 96 percent of those choosing to use Facebook.

The report also examined the types of businesses that choose to use Facebook advertising, and revealed that 94 percent of car dealers maintained a Facebook page, and 82 percent purchased advertising space. Cable television had similar results, with 92 percent having Facebook pages and 78 percent purchasing advertising space. Also reporting similar results were direct mail businesses, radio stations, movie theaters, retail stores, restaurants, real estate companies, and health care businesses. What is even more remarkable is the amount of growth Facebook has had with small businesses. An earlier study done by Thrive Analytics, found that while 80 percent of small businesses had a Facebook page, only 19 percent of them were purchasing advertising space. Borrell’s study found similar numbers with Facebook pages, but the number purchasing advertising from Facebook had climbed to 62 percent.

Borrell ranks social media as the third best advertising source available to businesses, behind word of mouth advertising and websites. Very interestingly, SEO and paid advertising through search engines did not appear on the list while email marketing, newspaper advertising, and even billboards did. A substantial number of businesses in the report, 44 percent, listed social media as their first choice for advertising. They tended to be smaller companies operating from a single location, and were much more likely to eliminate traditional advertising from their marketing than social media.
