As an Architizer A+ Award Special Mention honoree, reSAWN TIMBER co. has been identified as an industry leader for architecture and design worldwide.
Architizer, the world’s largest and fastest growing website for architecture, has launched the definitive architectural award program with 115+ categories and more than 350 jurors. The Architizer A+Awards received entries from 100 countries. Out of the thousands of products that were submitted, less than 15% were chosen by the jury as Special Mention honorees.
Winners are chosen by Architizer’s illustrious jury including such industry luminaries as Denise Scott Brown, Bjarke Ingels and Tom Kundig, as well as personalities from beyond architecture like Tony Hsieh (CEO, Zappos), Yves Behar (Fuseproject), John Edelman (CEO, Design Within Reach), Cameron Sinclair (Architecture for Humanity) and Barry Bergdoll (MoMA).
reSAWN’s CHARRED collection features cypress, black walnut, red oak, white oak and reclaimed hemlock that is burnt in the Japanese tradition of shou sugi ban. Translated as “the burning of Japanese cypress (sugi)” or yakisugi, and traditionally used in Japan as exterior siding, this ancient technique is gaining new life as a unique and modern wood finish.
The wood is carefully charred, misted with water, cooled, brushed to remove dust and loose debris, and then stained/sealed to create the unique designs you will find in the CHARRED collection. The top coat sealer is applied prior to shipping (for exterior applications, we recommend sealing the face & back). The charcoal barrier created through this process preserves the wood, and is fire, rot and insect resistant. The burning process accentuates the wood grain and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in different light.
reSAWN’s CHARRED collection features 30+ designs for a variety of applications including exterior siding, interior wall cladding, ceiling cladding, millwork & flooring. reSAWN also specializes in incorporating shou sugi ban techniques into custom wood furniture.
