Research Finds Link Between The Pill And Few Ovarian Cancer Deaths As Talcum Powder Lawsuit Filings Continue
October 31, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent article by WebMD stating that studies are showing a link between a decrease in ovarian cancer and use of the birth control pill.
The article stated that researchers believe the use of birth control pills may be a main reason why ovarian cancer deaths are down dramatically in several areas of the world. According to WebMD, “The analysis of World Health Organization data found that the ovarian cancer death rate fell 16 percent in the United States and almost 8 percent in Canada between 2002 and 2012.” Factors may also include reduced hormone therapy used by women going through menopause and better, more advanced treatment for ovarian cancer.
Regardless, the disease has still been at the center of many lawsuits brought forth by women claiming that companies like Johnson & Johnson deliberately hid information from consumers concerning their products’ alleged links to ovarian cancer. Many women have filed suits claiming that items like baby powder and shower powder, which contain talcum, can cause ovarian cancer when used as a feminine hygiene product.
The first talcum powder lawsuit was filed in 2009 by a woman from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The plaintiff was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006 when she was 49 years old, according to an article by Huffington Post. The plaintiff filed the complaint claiming Johnson & Johnson should be held accountable for gross negligence and fraud. Though a jury confirmed the association between cancer and talcum powder, the plaintiff was offered no compensatory damages. Since then, however, the company has been made to pay two large settlements to plaintiffs in two cases where juries found a link between cancer and their products. Johnson & Johnson denies that their products are linked to the deadly disease.
