Dallas, TX – Research shows that a majority of drivers engage in unsafe behaviors while behind the wheel. Dallas personal injury lawyer Amy Witherite of Eberstein Witherite LLP reports on the findings from the latest research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety that shows that 87 percent of drivers were found to have driven while impaired, distracted, at excessive speeds, while not wearing a seatbelt, or ran a red light within the previous month. According to Witherite, the results were released in conjunction with other research showing that an increase in car crash related injuries and deaths has occurred since 2014.

Driving a “Culture of Indifference”

The AAA Foundation releases an annual “Traffic Safety Culture Index” to identify behaviors and attitudes about driving safety among motorists. The data is taken from a sample of licensed drivers who have driven within the past 30 days of the research period. This year’s findings show:

President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, Peter Kissinger, has said of the issues presented by the organization’s most recent report “There is a culture of indifference for far too many drivers when it comes to road safety…The vast majority of motorists believe they are more careful than others on the road, though most of them are not making safe decisions while behind the wheel. We’re asking every driver to make responsible decisions to make the roads safer for everyone.”

Reducing Common Risky Behaviors Among Drivers

According to Texas car wreck attorney Witherite, the state of Texas has been among the top states to see increases in traffic injuries and fatalities in recent years. In two recent blogs posted by the lawyer’s firm, “Son Witnesses Parents Being Struck by Suspected Drunk Driver in Fatal Crash” and “Dallas Car Crash Caused by Criminal Negligence Claims Lives of Three Children,” the accident injury lawyer identifies two of the most common risky driving behaviors that lead to fatal car crashes and discusses their impact on the families of victims in the aftermath.

To facilitate a safer driving environment for everyone, Witherite suggests that drivers:

Witherite also says in the latter publication, “the number of personal injury cases we see each year because some driver chose to act completely recklessly still blows my mind even after many years of practice” and recommends that victims in serious car wreck cases get a proper assessment of their legal options to move forward after having their lives disrupted by such an incident.
