Rotary World Peace Conference brings Freedom Drivers Project and Truckers Against Trafficking of Human Trafficking Awareness Awareness Day Event
LOS ANGELES, CA – Dec 30, 2015 – Recognizing that the trucking industry is playing a critical role in the fight against human trafficking, the Rotary World Peace Conference has invited Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) and its 48-foot-long mobile exhibit, the Freedom Drivers Project (FDP), to be part of the 2016 conference, Jan. 15-16 at the Ontario Convention Center, 200 E. Convention Center Way, Ontario, California.
Truckers Against Trafficking works with members of the trucking industry to educate, equip, empower and mobilize them to fight human trafficking as part of their everyday jobs. Since TAT began in 2009, trucker calls to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center have risen from three to more than 1200 by Sept. 30, 2015, resulting in 400 possible human trafficking cases, involving 692 victims, 234 of which are minors. TAT has been named by the United Nations as one of the 100 best anti-human trafficking practices in the world. They launched their FDP in the fall of 2014, and since then, the exhibit, which features five video monitors, artifacts from human trafficking survivors and educational displays, has traveled more than 57,000 miles to 46 events in 19 states to educate audiences on human trafficking, what the trucking industry is doing about it, and how the average person can join the fight against this crime.
The FDP will be located in the House of Friendship, on the southeast section of the convention hall and open to the public both Friday and Saturday, from 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. TAT representative Guido Hajenius will speak on Friday from 3:15-4:05 p.m. on the work TAT and the trucking industry are doing to fight human trafficking. Hajenius’ talk will be part of the conference’s Track C: Protecting and Rehabilitating Your Community.
Former president of the California Trucking Association Greg Owen, who is with Ability TriModal, is sponsoring the haul of the FDP to and from the conference.
The mission of the Rotary World Peace Conference 2016 is to bring together experts with solutions to major issues occurring in our personal lives, homes, schools, businesses and communities, not just in Southern California, but around the world.
“We are inviting leaders from health care, academia, government, public safety, religions, business, and communities to meet together to share the solutions presented by experts,” said Rudy Westervelt, conference convener. “The format will allow for action plans to be developed such that real and measureable actions can be undertaken when attendees return home.”
