Miami Beach, United States – August 31, 2017 /PressCable/

Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1932, S.J. Volk demonstrated his skill as a portrait artist and master caricaturist during childhood. His memories of a previous life as a portrait artist explained his uncanny talent so early in this life. His humorous drawings and writing provided a welcome relief from the depression era and his own painfully shy nature.

Fast forward to Florida: He landed in Miami Beach on a sizzling hot July 20, 1969 at precisely the same time as America’s cool lunar module Eagle landed on the moon. Obviously a positive omen.

By day he worked as cartoon editor on the Miami Star, a local newspaper edited and published by the legendary Art Rhodes and Margie Sherrill, who both saw in the artist a unique talent. At night, he would be seen sketching his quick insightful portraits at Miami Beach’s Hotel Fontainebleau, The Playboy Club, and the notorious Club Madonna.

Nightclub owner Leroy Griffith welcomed the artist’s sketches of the dancers and offered to advertise his work in the theater lobby. Volk’s vivid caricatures are reminiscent of the drawings by 19th century French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec at the famous Moulin Rouge in Paris.

S.J.Volk’s cartoons have appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines, including the Writer’s Digest and NEA Journal. Signed simply with his middle name “Josh”, his dashing cartoons are richly crafted masterworks of crisp laser-like precision. In a few swift bold lines, his cartoon characters spring to life with charming human foibles and subtle facial expressions. And his precisely-worded captions ignite each cartoon with fresh, original, and uproariously satirical humor.

His delightful book The Funny World of Freelance Writers is currently available on Amazon. For a free look inside, check it out here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1539027651.

At 85, Mr. Volk will soon launch his new book Soul Mates – the hilarious distillation of a lifetime of observation of males and females trying to communicate with each other. The author welcomes comments and will respond to all. His email: stevevolkano@gmail.com.
