Salaries Increased By 11% In European iGaming Sector In 2018/2019

Boston Link identifies a trend in movement of igaming companies to Malta despite concerns over real estate pressures and demand from other countries.

St. Julians, Malta – March 1, 2019 / /

The small Mediterranean island of Malta is home to most of Europe’s igaming companies and, as such, offers a great way to judge activity in the sector across Europe and beyond. The Maltese economy has grown strongly in recent years and is forecast to grow by more than 5% in 2019 – driven in part by growth in the igaming sector and the knock-on effects that creates.

The igaming sector places a strong emphasis on finding and retaining talented staff, which can be difficult to do in a relatively small country like Malta. All parts of the sector are represented in Malta, from C-suite executives to trainees in their first position. The sector also requires staff from around the world to work with clients and players in their mother tongues. For now, there is a strong Scandinavian presence in Malta, but as companies enter new markets further afield, staff are being recruited from countries like Japan and South America.

Specialised recruiter Boston Link, based in Malta, produces an annual salary survey to help companies better understand the employment landscape. Their 2019 survey shows that salaries have increased by 11% in 2018, which is well above average for a location in Europe. Boston Link has seen a significant number of new technology positions have become available, with many firms creating new roles that combine data analytics, tech and marketing. This is creating a consistent and growing demand for technology professionals with diverse and wide-ranging skill sets.

2018 saw particularly strong demand for staff with data analytics experience and AI capabilities to help manage all the data being created. Mid-to-senior positions and middle to senior management roles (excluding CEOs, CFOs, and COOs) have also seen a significant increase in salaries. This demonstrates the growing demand for high-quality industry expertise and leadership skills, with Head of Affiliates and Head of SEO departments being great examples. Firms have also tended to expand their social marketing teams and offer higher salaries for more specialised positions in these areas.

All is not rosy in the garden, though. Malta’s small size means that increasing staff numbers puts significant pressure on real estate rental prices which forces staff at all levels to request higher starting salaries. This is very likely to be even more of an issue in 2019 as continuing sector growth is boosted by the impact of Brexit. Several large UK gaming firms are already in the process of moving some or all of their operations to Malta and will be based in the same towns that are already under pressure.
