San Antonio Botanical Garden Hosts Climate Change Discussion

As San Antonio moves forward with the final phase of the SA Climate Ready Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, the talk is both timely and informative.

The San Antonio Botanical Garden invites the community to join the conversation about climate change with climate scientist Dr. Andrew Dessler. The talk, Climate Change: The Evidence, Why You Should Be Worried, and What We Can Do About It, is on Sunday, March 24, 2019 from 1pm-3pm. Doors open at 12:30pm. Seating is limited to the first 100 people. The talk is in partnership with William R. Sinkin Eco Centro and sponsored by San Antonio Water System (SAWS).

As San Antonio moves forward with the final phase of the SA Climate Ready Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (view on saclimateready.org ), the talk is both timely and informative. Dr. Dessler studies both the science of climate change and the policies, at all levels of government, required to address this dangerous challenge to our communities. “It is important for San Antonio’s citizens to be engaged in the implementation of the Climate Action and Adaption Plan,” said Dyhanara Rios, Community Relations Coordinator at William R. Sinkin Eco Centro. “One of the goals for Dr. Dessler’s talk is to empower our community to be the change makers that San Antonio needs to be climate ready now and in the future.” Dr. Dessler’s scientific research revolves around climate feedbacks, in particular, how water vapor and clouds act to amplify warming from the carbon dioxide that humans emit. His perspective and research will offer a valuable addition to our community discussion and to the development of an effective and powerful Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. Q&A session to follow the talk.

About Andrew Dessler

Dr. Dessler is presently a Professor of Atmospheric Sciences and the Reta A. Haynes Chair in Geosciences at Texas A&M University. His educational background includes a B.A. in Physics from Rice University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University. He also did postdoctoral work at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and spent nine years on the research faculty of the University of Maryland. During the last year of the Clinton Administration, he served as a Senior Policy Analyst in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Based on his research and policy experience, Dr. Dessler has authored two books on climate change: The science and politics of global climate change: A guide to the debate (Cambridge University Press, 2nd ed. 2010, co-written with Edward Parson), and Introduction to modern climate change (Cambridge University Press, 2nd ed. 2015). In 2012, he received the AGU’s Ascent Award from the atmospheric sciences section to reward exceptional achievement by a mid-career scientist. In recognition of his work on outreach, in 2011 he was named a Google Science Communication Fellow.
