San Antonio Commercial Solar Boom Challenged By Upcoming Rebate Expiration
Commercial businesses in San Antonio are rushing to get solar power installations scheduled before the expiration of rebates.
San Antonio, U.S.A. – July 17, 2015 /PressCable/ —
San Antonio has been at the forefront of the Texas solar power boom, in large part due to the generous rebates offered by local utility CPS Energy. “For most of these owners it’s about making over 20% return on their investment. There are not many places you can put your money today that deliver over 20% without the volatility of the markets.” Says Kyle Frazier, Director of Sales at contractor Freedom Solar Power. Like all good parties, though, it looks like it will soon be coming to an end.

San Antonio is slated to eliminate their current solar program by the end of the year. The city will soon be moving from an upfront rebate to a new “rent the roof” program that will change the equation for many investors. “We anticipate a massive bottleneck of projects trying to get through before the deadline. This will mean that some projects won’t get built due to the time sensitivity,” says Frazier. Freedom Solar is telling their clients that paperwork should be submitted by the end of August to ensure a 2015 installation.
Solar photovoltaic or PV systems convert sunlight to electricity, which makes them an excellent way to increase the energy efficiency of a home or commercial building while being environmentally friendly. These electric-generating solar systems have become more affordable in San Antonio every year because of generous rebates and federal tax credits. However, once the rebates have expired, the solar boom may be challenged by a ROI model that has no local precedent.
Freedom Solar Power was the #1 solar contractor in Texas for 2014 according to Solar Power World Magazine, and has provided solar solutions for Lake Flato Architects, Northwest Vista College, Mission Restaurant Supply, Joeris Construction, Hoppy Monk, and dozens of others.
