Sarasota Hosts Secret Summit of Metal on Metal Hip Trial Teams
SARASOTA, FL / ACCESSWIRE / January 9, 2020 / Trial teams from around the United States wrapped up a secret summit in Sarasota, Florida yesterday. The trial teams are gearing up for upcoming trials against Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:ZBH) (SWX:ZBH) over its metal on metal hip replacements. The trials are on behalf of patients suffering severe injuries from heavy metal poisoning caused by Biomet metal on metal hip replacements. The trial teams discussed strategy and reviewed sealed Zimmer Biomet documents that they will use at trial. The summit was hosted by Maglio Christopher & Toale, P.A., the law firm leading the Biomet hip litigation. The strategy meeting was comprised of top trial lawyers from law firms in California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Washington, Indiana, Arkansas, and others.
The upcoming trials will focus on the failure of ZBH to recall the Biomet metal on metal hip replacement. As a result, patients with the metal on metal hip replacements don't realize that they potentially have a ticking time-bomb in their bodies. Patients in the upcoming trials continue to suffer heavy metal poisoning from these hip replacements resulting in tissue death, muscle wasting, and bone destruction. At the insistence of the Australian government, Biomet metal on metal hip replacements were recalled there by the company but have yet to be recalled in the United States.
Zimmer Biomet is scheduled to face dozens of trials over the Biomet metal on metal hip replacements in 2020 and 2021, with the first trial date set for this May. Previously, the litigation involving these hips was mostly in the federal court system which is favored by large multinational corporations such as Zimmer Biomet. However, much of the litigation has now moved to the state courts around the country.
It remains to be seen when Zimmer Biomet will finally recall their Biomet metal on metal hip replacements and warn patients and surgeons of the danger. Surgeons who have studied the risk of metal on metal hip replacements recommend regular cobalt and chromium blood testing and ultrasound or MARS MRI of the area around the hip replacement. Many, if not most, patients with metal on metal hip replacements are unaware of the danger posed by their hip and the need for intensive medical follow-up. If Zimmer Biomet continues to fail to recall the Biomet metal on metal hip replacements, trial publicity and verdicts may help warn patients about the dangers posed by their metal on metal hip replacements.
