Several Workers Injured In Midtown Worksite Fire, Prompting Personal Injury Lawyer To Call For Additional Safety Regulations

August 02, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com provides details on an incident reported by DNAInfo.com where 4 construction workers were taken to local medical facilities after they suffered injuries when a basement transformer caught fire at a New York construction site. The fire occurred at 390 Madison Avenue and East 47th Street. The workers were lucky to have only sustained minor injuries. The victims were employees of Tishman Construction and they were rebuilding an office tower.

Attorney Thomas Moverman of Lipsig, Shapey, Manus, & Moverman commended firefighters for their quick action that prevented the fire from becoming much more dangerous and life-threatening. He also stated that federal regulators need to begin to take action to strengthen the nation’s safety regulations for construction workers.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is a federal regulatory agency responsible for the health and safety of over 130 million workers all across the United States. It is responsible for 8 million worksites with only 2,200 safety inspectors nationwide. It could be considered understaffed due to the fact that each inspector is responsible for over 59,000 workers, which is an overwhelming task.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has released information regarding non-fatal injuries that occur on the job in the United States, as well as illnesses suffered by employees. The BLS concludes that there were nearly 3 million non-fatal injuries and illnesses suffered by employees in 2014 where one-third of the victims were out of work for 1 day. However, the average time absent from work after a non-fatal injury or illness is 9 days. Many times though employees are not lucky and suffer much more serious injuries that necessitate hospitalization, or in extreme cases, are fatal.
