SGLT2 Inhibitor Drug Invokana Linked To Side Effects In New Lawsuit
April 18, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com announces the startling new concerns of severe side effects linked to the SGLT2 inhibitor drug Invokana. This medication used to treat type-2 diabetes was recently named in 50 cases reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration discussing patients that had used the drug and had suffered from renal impairment and kidney failure. The FDA announced these facts after Invokana had only been on the market for its first year alone.
Recently approved by the FDA in March of 2013, Invokana is a new-age diabetes drug that is classified as a SGLT2 inhibitor (sodium-glucose cotransporter-2). It was initially approved to help type-2 diabetes manage their glucose levels. Invokana and other similar SGLT2 class inhibitors work to prevent the absorption of excess sugars in the kidneys, by removing them through urination.
The issue that is potentially causing all of the negative reports with Invokana is that the drug relies very heavily on the kidneys when working and potentially causes damage to those vital organs. Patients containing pre-existing kidney conditions may also be at a much greater risk for harm with these drugs, and unfortunately these ailments are very common with diabetes patients. The reported damages to the kidneys associated with Invokana are lamentably permanent and cannot be repaired. Patients with severe kidney damage usually require dialysis while awaiting a full kidney transplant.
In addition to the reports of kidney failure and renal impairment, the FDA has also indicated that they obtained another 19 adverse case reports involving patients that had taken Invokana that had begun to develop other serious medical complications such as urinary tract infections and even dangerous blood infections. These 19 reports also indicated that the patients had to be hospitalized to receive dialysis, which is a treatment for kidney failure.
