Ship Overseas Eyes Big Business Growth from Car Shipments, Invests in RoRo Segment
San Diego-based international shipping company is announcing its plan to boost business growth by doubling the annual handling of car shipping via Roll-on/Roll-off vehicles by the end of 2017.

Ship Overseas Inc. recorded the highest volume of auto shipping via RoRo in its second quarter that ended in June 2017. The volume was 20% higher than in 2016.

Roll-on/Roll-off vessels are designed to transport wheeled automotive cargo like cars and trucks. To be shipped via a RoRo vessel, the vehicles have to be in running condition since they have to be driven on and off the RoRo ship on their own wheels or by a platform vehicle. The vehicles are loaded onto the RoRo vessel via a stern ramp, which ensures they are handled safely regardless of weather conditions. On the inside, a RoRo vessel resembles a parking house because of the ramps connecting the decks. The motor vehicles are rolled onboard to their designated decks and secured to them with lashing. The choice of deck is determined according to the weight, height and length of the vehicle.
The popularity of RoRo shipping may be owed to the fact that it guarantees reliable departure and arrival dates, which cannot be said of other shipping methods such as Container shipping.
