Skokie Man Gains Mobility After Nearly Losing Everything With The Help of Homewatch CareGivers
101 Mobility Chicago seeks to partner with agencies like Home Watch Caregivers, social services, and non-profit who serve North Shore area residents with mobility challenges.
Northbrook – April 27, 2015 /PressCable/ —
For the past year, 92-year-old Paul Newman has crawled up the stairs of his split-level Skokie home. Paul has almost no strength in his legs and physically cannot walk up steps. Stairs cause a daily struggle for Paul as his only bathroom is located upstairs and the kitchen downstairs. Last month, Paul was rushed to hip replacement surgery the day before his wife’s funeral. After 60 years of marriage, during Mrs. Newman’s memorial services, Paul was confined to his hospital bed.
As Paul underwent the rehabilitation process, his son Wayne Newman searched online for eldercare resources when Wayne contacted Homewatch CareGivers. “As I reviewed the challenges Mr. Newman faced getting from his first to second floor, I immediately thought of a partnering with 101 Mobility Chicago,” said Mitch Abrams, owner of Homewatch CareGivers.
101 Mobility Chicago was heartbroken to hear of Mr. Newman’s newly widowed status and loss of mobility– occurring so close to Passover. All Mr. Newman wanted was to gain the independence to remain in his long-time Skokie home. “Once Mitch Abrams brought Mr. Newman’s predicament to our attention, we felt compelled to help,” explained Nick Lopez, owner of 101 Mobility Chicago.
A team of 101 Mobility stair lift installers arrived at Mr. Newman’s home on April 9th to give Paul Newman the at-home accessibility he could have only dreamed of. “The stair lift has literally made it possible for my father to stay in the house. It has been a gift from heaven,” Wayne said as he tried to find the words to express the “gratitude” he feels towards Home Watch Caregivers and 101 Mobility Chicago.
Amy Stern, Community Marketing Manager at 101 Mobility Chicago was at Paul Newman’s home during the stair lift installation and said that Paul “was like a kid at Disney” when he went up to the second level of his home with ease. The mobility provider was inspired by Paul Newman to create a quarterly stair lift donation program. 101 Mobility Chicago seeks to partner with agencies like Home Watch Caregivers, social services, and non-profit who serve North Shore area residents with mobility challenges.
When asked what Amy wanted Chicago locals to take away from this story, she responded, “There are a lot of surprises when you come home from an accident or surgery; it is important to consider the barriers in your home and pre-plan for a safe return,” Amy continued. “Mr. Newman happened to come home to a good surprise. Too many times, people come home to bad surprises. Our goal is to diffuse mobility-related injuries, hospital re-admittance numbers, and lack of at-home accessibility by partnering with more agencies like Homewatch CareGivers.”
