Most local businesses do a terrible job of marketing themselves online, says Paul Stevens of Bootstrap Local Marketing. “They are not in the internet marketing business. And they are used to doing things a certain way.” Older marketing strategies worked a decade ago, but people’s habits have changed and consumers make buying decisions differently now. So Bootstrap Local Marketing is offering online marketing training.

“I talk to local small business owners and most of them say the same thing, ‘Everybody knows I’m here.’” Not true, says Stevens. The local make-up of the Northumberland and Peterborough area has shifted significantly in the last ten years. Thousands of Toronto area folks have moved in, looking for lower priced real estate and a more restful retirement lifestyle. They don’t know anyone and aren’t familiar with the area. So they go online to find services and products.

“Hastings is a great example” says Stevens. “It’s a small town, with friendly people and affordable real estate, but according to Google, they don’t offer accommodations, truck repair, catering, a real estate lawyer, snow removal, yard work, landscaping, plumbers, carpenters or home renovations. Well, I know for a fact that all those services are available. But local businesses haven’t promoted themselves online as offering them. It’s hard to guess how much money they have lost as a result.”

According to Stevens, the level of skill needed to correct the marketing strategy problems he finds is quite basic. The six hour training session provides “90-95% of all the online marketing skills a local small business needs.” His consulting business has started providing the marketing workshops to help local businesses, but also because he doesn’t want to do this kind of simple internet marketing himself. He prefers to focus on marketing strategy, video marketing, SEO (search engine optimization) and, importantly, reputation marketing. “We’ve had great feedback so far,” says Stevens. “They workshop attendees love it.”

The influx of a more urban population is creating additional problems for local businesses. The ex-urbanites are far more likely to leave online reviews than most long-time residents. Those newly arrived and visitors are frequently dependant on reviews to help them make buying decisions. And that’s where the problems lay. “I’ve had clients with bad reviews, dating back two years or more, which they were completely unaware of. They didn’t even know customers could leave reviews about them online. It’s impossible to say how much business they missed because of those bad reviews. That’s why I cover basic reputation marketing during the six hour training. Businesses need to protect themselves from a mistake, a bad day or a malicious customer.”

Bootstrap Local Marketing will be running the one day workshops again in the Peterborough, Cobourg, Port Hope and Trent Hills area starting early in the new year. For more information contact Paul Stevens directly at 705-778-5150.
