Sneads Ferry Resident Sustains Visual Impairment From E-Cigarette Explosion, Spurs Possible E-Cig Lawsuit Cases
June 13, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on electronic cigarette explosions which seem to be occurring with increasing frequency as the devices grow in popularity. A man, 54-years-old, received shocking injuries from an e-cigarette explosion, according to JDNews.com. Turning to electronic cigarettes as an alternative to smoking, he found that his choice is regrettable. The Sneads Ferry, North Carolina resident reported that his e-cigarette exploded in his face, dousing him in what felt like “hot oil,” and not only burning his face and inducing severe pain but leaving him temporarily blind. E-cigarettes use “juice” that can be flammable, and his brand normally uses a mixture of propylene glycol and alcohol, both flammable substances. With an overnight hospital stay for burn treatment, the result of his e-cigarette use, he reported that the small warning text on the box was difficult to read and didn’t catch his attention. He did not understand that the product he was using “could pack a punch like that.”
The FDA is encouraging people to use their MedWatch page to report e-cigarette adverse events, though they are not, at this time, officially tracking the numbers of incidents. Reports in the media have been increasing, and people are beginning to realize that there may be more dangers to e-cigarettes than previously thought. The harm is not just to adult electronic cigarette users: at a mall kiosk, a Brooklyn boy of just 14 recently experienced an electronic cigarette explosion in his face, leaving him blind in one eye, with a ripped cornea and burned hands. Much controversy has come from incidents involving youth, such as this one, as most states prohibit the sale of such products to minors.
