NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / October 27, 2017 / B&H Photo would like to share the announcement of the Sony Alpha a7R III Mirrorless Digital Camera and the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens. This camera is the latest release for Sony’s full-frame mirrorless camera lineup and aims to be a high-resolution offering with its 42.4MP Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor. Improved speed is another signature achievement of the a7R III, as it boasts a 10 fps continuous-shooting rate with either an electronic or mechanical shutter. Also, the camera features enhanced UHD 4K video performance at frame rates up to 30 fps, with options for S-Log3 and the Hybrid Log-Gamma HDR profile. Along with the camera, Sony has announced a versatile 24-105mm zoom lens for full-frame E-mount cameras. This mid-range zoom is designed for both stills and video usage and features a constant f/4 maximum aperture.

Using the BIONZ X processor and front-end LSI, the a7R III maximizes the performance of the 42.4MP Exmor R CMOS sensor and dramatically speeds up operation of the entire system. This enables the capture of images with 15 stops of dynamic range, using 16-bit processing and creating 14-bit raw files. The images are cleaner, with noise reduction of almost a full stop, and native sensitivities of up to ISO 32000, which can be expanded to ISO 102400. The speed boost is easily seen in the camera’s 10 fps continuous shooting specification, with either the silent electronic shutter or the low-vibration mechanical shutter. The camera also features a larger buffer that can support bursts of up to 76 sequential raw frames. On top of this, the Fast Hybrid AF System now features both 399 phase-detection points and 425 contrast-detection points, along with updated algorithms that result in a system that operates twice as fast as before.

As a multimedia machine, the Sony a7R III can record UHD 4K video at up to 30p and boasts a Super35mm mode that uses full-pixel readout to produce exceptionally detailed images. Full-frame recording has been dramatically improved as well, for added versatility during shooting. Other advancements in the a7R III include the addition of the S-Log3 gamma and the Hybrid Log-Gamma profile for an Instant HDR workflow. Slow & Quick Motion is available for slow motion Full HD recording at up to 120 fps.

Moving to the external design, the a7R III received a major overhaul with a substantial body upgrade, including the addition of dual SD card slots, with the primary slot supporting the fast UHS-II standard. The camera also works with the NP-FZ100 battery pack, which is 2.2 times larger than the NP-FW50 used in predecessors. Viewing and composing imagery is significantly improved, with the implementation of both a 3.7m-dot OLED EVF and a 3.0″ 1.44m-dot tilting LCD touchscreen. Additionally, the camera features a multi-selector joystick, an AF-ON button, and built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. And it now offers both a USB 3.1 Type-C port and a PC sync terminal.

Brand new Imaging Edge software will be made available for getting the most out of the camera’s images, including Remote, Viewer, and Edit software. This software is also required to make use of the new Pixel Shift Multi Shooting mode, which uses the 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE stabilization system to capture full-color information at each pixel. This results in a more detailed and color-accurate image, with 169.6MP of data.

The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens is appealing for its compact design and versatile zoom range, from wide-angle to short telephoto focal lengths. A constant f/4 aperture ensures consistent performance throughout the range, while various specialized elements and coatings help minimize aberrations, improve sharpness, and reduce flare. Optimized for stills and video, the lens features a fast and quiet Direct Drive SSM AF system and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, helping to capture sharp imagery. Additionally, the lens is able to focus as close as 1.25′ for a magnification of 0.31x.
