Spinal Punctures: FDA Issues Warning Against Procedures As Xarelto Lawsuit Filings Involving Bleeding Continue

October 13, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on an FDA warning that informs patients taking Xarelto to avoid certain procedures that could increase their risk of uncontrollable bleeding.

According to the warning, placement or removal of an epidural catheter or lumbar puncture is best performed when the anticoagulant effect of rivaroxaban is low; however, the exact timing to reach a sufficiently low anticoagulant effect in each patient is not known. If a doctor should decide to perform the procedure, the patient should be monitored for signs of neurological impairment.

Xarelto is a prescription medicine used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation, not caused by a heart valve problem. It is also used to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and to help reduce the risk of the conditions occurring again. Additionally, it can be used to reduce the risk of forming a blood clot in the legs and lungs of people who have just had knee or hip replacement surgery, according to the Xarelto website.

Since it was approved by the FDA in 2011, the drug has been the subject of several warnings and thousands of lawsuits. The lawsuits claim that companies such as Bayer AG and Johnson & Johnson should be held accountable for marketing what they claim companies knew was a dangerous drug. Alleged side effects of the drug include hemorrhagic pericardial effusion, epidural hematoma, stroke, heart attack, rectal bleeding, pulmonary embolism, brain hemorrhages and internal bleeding. In addition, plaintiffs in the cases have also addressed a lack of an antidote for the effects of the drug.

“Our lawsuits allege that the manufacturers failed to warn our clients about the severe side effects from which our clients suffered while taking the drug,” said attorney Laurence Banville, a contributor to the Xarelto litigation updates on TheProductLawyers.com. “We are speaking with families who have had brain bleeds, gastrointestinal bleeds, vaginal bleeding, and bleeding from trauma where hospitalization and extreme measures were taken by medical staff to help save the patient’s life,” Banville continued. “We look forward to fighting for the rights of our clients and pursuing just compensation for the injuries and hospitalization.”

The attorneys of Banville Law, the firm behind TheProductLawyers.com, are offering complimentary consultations to anyone who suffered injury or hospitalization after a bleed while on Xarelto. For more information about this release or the Xarelto litigation call 888-478-9711.
