Sri Chinmoy – On the Vision and Role of the United Nations

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / September 8, 2017 / Having grown up in an ashram in Southern India, Sri Chinmoy practiced various spiritual disciplines from the young age of twelve. Sensing a command from within to share his findings, he dedicated his life to teaching his methods of using meditation, music, and sports to open one’s “spiritual heart” to share its inspiration with all those who seek a higher meaning in life. The devotional teacher’s methods reached millions of people including those in the United Nations, and, in turn, helped encourage those working there to deepen and expand the part they play in the world.

In 1970, Sri Chinmoy was invited by then Secretary General U Thant to conduct twice-weekly meditations at the U.N. The Peace Meditation at the United Nations quickly grew into a series of art exhibits, concerts, and lectures in addition to the meditations. During this time, Sri Chinmoy identified various aspects of the United Nations that distinguished its vision and the role it plays in guiding the world towards peace. He once shared, “We cannot judge the U.N. by what it has already offered us. Only we can judge the U.N. on its soulful promise, its promise that it will one day flood the world with boundless peace.”

According to Sri Chinmoy, the United Nations is a “symbol of man’s inner cry” and offers the world a vision of peace, universal brotherhood, and a promise of oneness in the world. In describing the U.N., he said, “The United Nations is humanity’s home. The lofty vision of the United Nations is that we all belong to a peace-loving oneness-world-family. This vision will eventually transform the face and fate of the world.” He felt its assistance in humanitarian needs across the world is incalculable, and Chinmoy’s words and methods have been instilled in the multiple officials, ambassadors, and members of the U.N. that manifest these deeds.

Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, or Sri Chinmoy, was a spiritual leader who believed in attaining a higher form of inner oneness by meditating through silence, athleticism, music, and other activities. Over the years, he guided hundreds of thousands of students to grow their hearts, minds, and bodies and master their capabilities. Chinmoy’s multifarious peace initiatives and creative works such as the Peace Run, Peace Concerts, and the humanitarian relief operations have been an endless source of strength and inspiration to people of all religious, cultural, and social backgrounds. His admirers also include celebrities such as Carl Lewis, Jeff Goldblum, Helen Hunt and the late Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa. Though he passed away in 2007, Sri Chinmoy’s teachings continue to influence all, especially those working at the United Nations.
