State Tragedy Spurs Bail Bonds in Tuscaloosa Reform

December 17, 2019 – – Tuscaloosa, AL – The tragic disappearance and murder of Aniah Blanchard, a 19-year-old from Homewood, Alabama, has spurred Senator Cam Ward to push for bail bond reform. Bail bondsmen in Tuscaloosa are anticipating changes to the current system soon in light of Blanchard’s case.

Aniah Blanchard was just 19-years-old when she was kidnapped near a convenience store in Auburn, Alabama in late October. For nearly a month, the entire state of Alabama was on watch for the missing girl. Just before Thanksgiving, Aniah was found murdered in the woods.

Ibraheem Yazeed is the main suspect in the case. Yazeed was released on bail after he was charged with attempted murder and kidnapping at the time of Aniah’s disappearance. Prosecutors believe after Yazeed was released after posting bail, he found Aniah and committed the crime. Had he been denied bail, this tragedy may have never occurred.

Senator Cam Ward is pushing for legislation that would restrict those previously charged and convicted for violent crimes from posting bail. His reasoning behind the push is that those previously convicted of violent crimes are much more likely to commit the same crime again. If they are released from jail because they paid bail, they can commit the same crime and further harm others, as in the case with Yazeed and Blanchard.

Senator Cam Ward isn’t the only force in Alabama that’s working to reform bail bond laws. According to WSFA 12 News, “Former lawmaker and Homewood attorney Paul DeMarco has been in contact with lawmakers urging a solution. DeMarco has written an editorial calling for changes.”

It’s unclear what reform will take place and when, but it is clear that bail bond companies in Tuscaloosa will see the effects of the Blanchard case soon.
