Stress Urinary Incontinence: A Glance At A Common Issue At The Center Of Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit Filings

April 19, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on stress urinary incontinence, one of the medical issues prompting use of transvaginal mesh. The ailment has been treated since 1996 with the use of transvaginal mesh in order to prevent urinary loss.

According to the National Library of Medicine, stress urinary incontinence occurs when the bladder leaks urine during movement, coughing, heavy lifting, changing position or exercise. It occurs when the muscles of the bladder become too weak and urine leaves the bladder when pressure is applied to it. The weakening of muscles can occur for a variety of reasons including certain medications, childbirth, injury to the urethra or surgeries. Stress urinary incontinence is most common in women, who make up 75-80% of the 25 million people in the United States who suffer from the condition, according to Phoenix Physical Therapy. Multiple pregnancies or vaginal deliveries can increase the risk of suffering from stress urinary incontinence in women.

The condition has become the center of many lawsuits against transvaginal mesh manufacturers such as Johnson & Johnson, C.R. Bard, Boston Scientific, Cook Medical and Coloplast Corp. Many women who have suffered from stress urinary incontinence have been treated using transvaginal mesh that is placed under the urethra to prevent urinary loss. As a result, many of these women have claimed that the mesh caused severe side effects that the companies did not adequately warn health care professionals about. These side effects alleged by mesh lawsuit plaintiffs include organ perforation, bleeding, severe pain in the vaginal or pelvic area, infection, recurrent incontinence or prolapse, inability to engage in sexual intercourse and vaginal scarring.

Several thousand cases concerning mesh have already been brought to court and more are expected to accumulate. Meanwhile, attorneys at Banville Law are working to make sure that those who believe they have suffered adverse side effects as a result of a transvaginal mesh implant are given the important opportunity to explore their legal rights fully. Qualifying individuals may be entitled to legal action and financial compensation. Banville Law is currently offering free case evaluations for those parties.
