Study Finds British Medical Students Training Abroad Want To Return To The UK

MedConnect Europe has published a survey showing an increase in UK students turning to medical school in Europe. Their survey has also found that the majority want to come back to the UK to practice following their education.

A survey conducted by MedConnect Europe in 2020 found that there are over 3,000 British students currently studying in Bulgaria alone. Many more spread throughout different universities across Europe such as the Czech Republic, Latvia, and Romania.

With medical schools being ultra-competitive in the UK, many students are turning to European universities as an alternative. The study cites some of the benefits of studying medicine abroad, including less competition for spaces, cheaper tuition fees and living costs relative to the UK, and the fact that EU qualifications are accepted by the GMC

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the detrimental effects caused by a shortage of health care professionals in the UK. The British students studying abroad are eager to start their careers in the NHS upon graduation. Ultimately this intake should help bridge the gap between the shortage of doctors in the UK and those that are needed.

The large cohort of UK students training abroad can also help save the NHS millions where they spend in foreigner recruitment since the medical students are already British citizens.

However, currently many healthcare organizations are unaware of the British students studying
abroad and there is very little support available for their integration.

Dr. Anwar Khan told GPonline that a ‘systematic approach’ was needed to ensure that British
students who had studied abroad were helped to enter UK practice, with a view specifically to
boosting GP numbers.

Helping British medical students studying abroad can be the answer to many problems currently
faced by the NHS especially during a crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every year there is a strong increase in the number of students applying to medical schools abroad in Europe. Due to lower competition, many see studying abroad as a more realistic alternative to studying in the UK with the quality of education being just as good as any other EU country.

MedConnect Europe is working with over 10 universities in 5 different countries in Europe that are accepting British students to study medicine in English. The objective is to connect students looking to study abroad with the right universities and help guide students with the application process.
