Study Results Draw Attention To Possible Product Dangers Lend Support To IVC Filter Lawsuit Plaintiffs

April 19, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the results of recent studies which appear to show that trauma patients choosing to implant IVC filter devices in order to prevent blood clots are not any more likely to survive than those who do not. However, they have been found to be 83% more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis. This concerning information was published in the Annals of Surgery medical journal.

These notable study results were obtained after researchers collected data from almost 40,000 trauma patients, 2% of which had chosen to be implanted with IVC filter devices between 2010 and 2014. Although this filter placement seemed to have no effect whatsoever on the potential of fatalities among trauma patients, researchers found that it did substantially increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis development. They commented, “High rates of prophylactic IVC filter placement have no effect on reducing trauma patient mortality and are associated with an increase in DVT events.”

Deep vein thrombosis is a condition in which a blood clot forms in a patient’s lower legs or thigh area. These types of blood clots can become very large, damaging veins as they travel, blocking blood flow, and potentially breaking loose in dangerous areas of the body such as the heart or lungs, causing significant or life-threatening damage.

IVC filters are used in patients who are at risk of blood clots, but who are unable to take traditional blood-thinning drugs. These small cage-like devices are implanted into the inferior vena cava vein, where they block potential blood clots traveling from the lower body toward the heart and lungs where they could cause pulmonary embolism or other significant damage.
