Sukanto Tanoto’s Asian Agri Speaks Out on Continuing Commitment to Help Smallholder Farmers

Indonesian Giant Asian Agri Adopts Extended Policy for Helping to Develop Individual Smallholders throughout the Country

JAKARTA, INDONESIA / ACCESSWIRE / May 28, 2015 / Asian Agri announced that the company’s policy regarding the support, assistance and educational resources it provides for smallholder farmers in Riau, Jambi and North Sumatra has been renewed, so that farmers – including independent smallholders – would continue to benefit from the extensive help the agricultural giant has been providing since 1987.

As a member of the RGE group of companies, founded by prominent business leader and philanthropist, Sukanto Tanoto, Asian Agri continues to be committed to helping smallholders develop. The company provides farmers with information on basic safety practices in the palm oil industry, as well as assisting them in launching their own businesses in other fields of practice – such as growing livestock or managing their own shops.

The training and educational resources brought by Asian Agri to plasma and independent smallholders have led to a remarkably fast growth in the sustainable development of the Riau, Jambi and North Sumatera provinces in Indonesia.

Today, almost 30,000 smallholder families in the area, managing a total of 60,000 hectares worth of oil palm estates, are enjoying improved quality of living compared to what they had in the past. This, in turn, has also led to better business and educational opportunities, as well as significant economic improvement, set to grow to even higher levels in the next few years with the help of Asian Agri.

With a greater industry emphasis on adoption of green technologies, and the Indonesian government’s efforts for promoting sustainability, more smallholders have found themselves having to seek new ways of complying with the upgraded industrial standards.

By providing training and increasing the knowledge of sustainable practices for palm oil farming among small farmers, Asian Agri hopes to create even more imposing results than in the past, by effectively boosting Indonesia’s industry to new heights.
