Sun Dollar Energy Urges North Carolinians to Prepare for the Next Big Storm with Solar & Backup Battery

We have a lot of people asking about solar with battery back up following Hurricane Florence

Raleigh, North Carolina – November 7, 2018 /MarketersMedia/

In big storms lines go down, incapacitating the grid. Duke Energy projected that there were nearly 700,000 outages from Tropical Storm Michael. According to Duke Energy, battery backups would have allowed the more than one million North Carolinian homes to weather the disruption. Winter storms are not without their perils either. Ice storms and blizzards leave Hundreds of households in the dark each winter with an average of 24 hours without power. According to reports, nearly 200 people have suffered carbon monoxide poisoning in North Carolina from using charcoal-fueled grills to hear their power-outaged homes. Solar panels with home energy storage are an increasingly popular way that people are protecting themselves and their families from days without electricity. With rebates, solar is an evermore affordable way to do so.

While there would be a certain number of solar panels damaged in the storms, the batteries have a life-cycle of 2-3 days battery bank storage which would cover 74% of outages fully. Sun Dollar Energy President/CEO Daniel Lezama says, “We have a lot of people asking about solar with battery back up following Hurricane Florence. Solar with energy storage allows your solar panels to work in the event of a grid disruption and has many advantages to a traditional generator.”

Solar panels with battery backups up allow you to ride out the storm in comfort. These systems save you money every month on your power bill, pay for themselves over time, are low maintenance, and automatically power your home should the grid lose power. Traditional generators require regular maintenance, are noisy, emit dangerous carbon monoxide and require fuel which may be in short supply before and after a storm. Many people don’t realize that most generators are not rated for continuous duty and are not meant to be run for days on end. Solar with a battery backup is limited by your battery capacity and size of your solar array, requiring some energy management, but if correctly used will allow you to live off the grid indefinitely.

As part of a 2017 settlement, Duke Energy plans to add 700 megawatts of solar and 50 megawatts of batteries over the next four years – six years faster than the company’s original plan. Duke also plans to build North Carolina’s largest battery storage project sin the western part of the state. These $30 million batteries will improve power reliability and help stabilize the grid in North Carolina.

Although there is no North Carolina Federal Tax Rebate, the other available rebates and incentives are bringing a lot of NC residents over to green energy solutions. Duke Energy customers can save up to $6000 with the 2019 solar installation rebate starting January first even if you get Solar Panels installed now.

Sun Dollar Energy’s Micha Hamilton says, “having power readily available can mean the difference between extremely comfortable situations or very uncomfortable situations in these storms.”

Lezama adds that Sun Dollar is “with you every step of the way, from the initial plans to the permits and paperwork to post installation support and grid interconnection. We have you covered.”

Sun Dollar Energy is licensed and insured with a reputation for quality work and outstanding customer service. They have installed hundreds of solar systems in NC with expertise in a wide range of products including energy storage and solar shingles.
