Survey Reveals Negative Comments From Family Members Invites Pressure To Look “Good” At Christmas
A survey conducted by Crown Clinic has revealed that many Brits feel pressured to look “good” when meeting with friends and family at Christmas. While the majority feel good about themselves while spending time with others, the survey highlights the need for kindness and support.
United Kingdom – November 24, 2023 —
Crown Clinic conducted a survey of 500 Brits in an effort to understand how their self-esteem fluctuates during the months leading up to Christmas. The results painted a picture of how people truly feel about themselves during the season where reconnecting with friends and family is at the heart of the celebration.
The survey revealed that 70% of Brits tend to feel good about themselves when around family and friends, highlighting the positive impact of these relationships on self-esteem.
It also found that despite feeling good about themselves when around family and friends, 44% of Brits feel pressured to look ‘good’ when reuniting with people at Christmas.
The survey discovered that 41% of respondents’ families have made at least one negative comment about their appearance in the past. This may explain why Brits feel pressured to look better at Christmas in front of friends and family.
These findings reveal that the pressure to look good during the festive season can have a significant impact on individuals’ confidence and well-being. Outside influence from others affects how people feel they need to present themselves and how they believe other people see them.
Crown Clinic’s survey sheds light on the emotional dynamics surrounding Christmas gatherings, emphasising the importance of supporting one another and promoting a positive body image during this time of the year.
“The emotional impact of holiday gatherings, as revealed by the survey, highlights the need for us all to prioritise not just emotional support but also a healthy self-image. Confidence often begins with how we perceive ourselves physically, and fostering that positivity can make a significant difference during the festive season,” explains Dr Asim Shahmalak from Crown Clinic. “Positive reinforcement regarding a person’s self-image can be transformative, especially for those facing hair loss, and it can help them find renewed confidence as they celebrate with loved ones.”
This survey serves as a reminder to be mindful of the impact of words and actions, as negative comments about appearance can have lasting effects on individuals’ self-esteem and overall mental health. As the Christmas season approaches, it is crucial to prioritise empathy, understanding, and acceptance when reconnecting with friends and family, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
