Talc Powder Lawsuits Spark Science Day For Courts

April 10, 2017 – – Talc powder lawsuits in California recently sparked a science day in court. With trials approaching, a California court convened a science day to examine the scientific basis for the thousands of lawsuits filed against Johnson & Johnson.

More than 300 talcum powder lawsuits have been filed in Los Angeles alone, all of which are focused on Johnson & Johnson talcum based products and filed by women who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer following the regular use of those products for feminine hygiene purposes.

The first bellwether trial in Los Angeles is scheduled for July. The plaintiff from this first case had previously motioned the court for preference. The plaintiff suffers from terminal ovarian cancer and it is expected that she has only six months left to live.

Attorneys representing plaintiffs focused during the science day on studies that date back as far as 1970 which suggest a link between using talc on the genital area and ovarian cancer. The defense attorneys focused on decisions by health advocacy groups and regulatory agencies that deemed not to classify talc as a carcinogen.

“The fact is that these studies date back decades and show that there is without a doubt a link between the continued use of talc and cancer,” says the spokesperson for talcumpowder.org.

Plaintiffs in these lawsuits allege that Johnson & Johnson knew about this link and that the company decided willingly to continue marketing the Shower-to-Shower and Johnson’s Baby Powder to women for use as feminine hygiene products. The company is named as a defendant in more than 3,000 such trials across the country, many of which are focused in California, New Jersey, Delaware, and Missouri. Other cases are being filed in additional states with many claims also being filed in various regions of Canada. The fifth trial in Missouri is set to begin within the next week and a sixth case is set for trial beginning in early June. More information about the trials can be found on talcumpowder.org.
