Talcum Powder Lawsuit Filings Concerning Ovarian Cancer Mount As Screening Test Sales Stop

November 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent article by Forbes stating that a widely used cancer screening test is not being sold by the company anymore after the FDA issued a statement about its effectiveness.

According to the article, Abcodia, the company who launched ROCA (Risk of Ovarian Cancer Algorithm) test last December, has temporarily suspended sales of the test in the U.S. after a safety communication from the FDA. The test works by measuring changes in a woman’s blood levels of CA-125, a protein frequently found in higher amounts in women with cancer. The proteins can, however, be raised because of other factors which means the tests could lead to false diagnoses.

The treatment of ovarian cancer has become a widely discussed topic after thousands of lawsuits were filed claiming talcum powder products, such as those manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, are linked to ovarian cancer.

Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder soared in popularity after 1892 when the director of scientific affairs Dr. Frederick B. Kilmer first invented a scented powder that was originally labeled “for toilet and nursery,” according to the Huffington Post. Many women then started using it to sprinkle it in their underwear and genital area for freshening purposes. The powder was later discovered to cause problems, leading to the first case claiming the product causes ovarian cancer in 2009.

Thousands of women in the U.S. have since made similar claims alleging that Johnson & Johnson hid valuable medical information that prevented consumers from knowing the dangers of using the powders. Those plaintiffs further claim that the use of Johnson & Johnson’s powders as a feminine hygiene product are directly linked to ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson has denied claims that their products cause cancer and has stated that no causal link exists.
