Teri Roiger Sings at Mezzrow Jazz Club in NYC June 26, 2018

June 21, 2018 – –

Tuesday, June 26, 2018, Teri Roiger brings her Jazz Quartet to the NYC Jazz venue Mezzrow. An inviting room with excellent wine and a Steinway piano, Mezzrow is a true jazz club and venue.

Mezzrow is owned and operated, along with sister jazz club, Smalls, (a hop skip and a jump across 7th ave.) by Mitch Borden and Spike Wilner, both jazz musicians themselves. The ambiance they have created with both clubs speaks to the beauty of a space dedicated to honest swinging jazz, both modern and traditional.

This is Roiger’s 2nd appearance at Mezzrow along with her recording and performing band consisting of Frank Kimbrough (piano), John Menegon (bass) and Steve Williams (drums). Expect a night of music penned by some of the most acclaimed composers in jazz as well as Roiger herself, an imaginative lyricist and composer.

Teri Roiger is most known for her interpretations of the music of Abbey Lincoln, Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk, as well as the Great American Songbook.

Her voice, phrasing, tone and time feel, create a textured performance and her band weaves the multi-colored musical tones around her with finesse and spontaneous creativity.

She also performs her own compositions on occasion, which have won numerous music awards.

Mezzrow is the companion club to Smalls, it is located on the east corner of 10th street and 7th ave, just across the road from Smalls. Opened in September of 2014, Mezzrow is a jazz piano room, a listening room and lounge in the heart of the historic district of Greenwich Village. Mezzrow draws its inspiration from the great piano rooms of the New York past, such as Bradley’s. If you are visiting NYC, it’s a go-to must for music lovers.

A cover charge paid at Mezzrow gets you entrance to Smalls and vice-versa. Pay one charge and go back and forth between the two clubs as much as you like in one evening. Smalls is a late night venue, sometimes open until 3 or 4 am.

Mezzrow, recently endorsed by the Steinway Piano Company, has a gorgeous new model “A” (6’3″) on which they feature the very best jazz pianists in New York City. Frank Kimbrough’s personal style and masterful playing sound best on a Steinway.

A longtime pianist in Ms. Roiger’s bands, Kimbrough’s style complements the voice perfectly. Along with the rhythm section of Menegon and Williams, expect a dynamic evening of tasty songs and great musicianship.

The listening room is a place for music lovers to have an intimate experience with the artists who are performing. Mezzrow is a musical environment run by musicians for musicians and as such, non-musicians get the benefit of no-frills, excellent musical listening to the heart’s content. Walk to the front of the club, get there early and relax into the musical creativity.

“Vocalist and Minneapolis native Teri Roiger isn’t afraid to expand the canon of her heartfelt influences. On “Ghost of Yesterday,” ( her most recent CD) she wrote lyrics to two Lester Young saxophone solos, and to Ella Fitzgerald’s vocalese on the tune,

“Them There Eyes”—all in the context of a Billie Holiday tribute. Thelonious Monk’s family blessed her lyrics to the composer’s classic, “Misterioso,” which she rechristened “Listen To Your Soul.” That blend of daring and intimacy with the music is evident in her singing too.” Britt Robson, City Pages (June 2018)

Mezzrow is Located at 163 West 10th st. NYC (close to 7th Ave. in the basement)
