Texas Man Files Risperdal Lawsuit Claiming Drug Caused Development Of Gynecomastia
April 04, 2016 – – LegalHerald.com reports on a lawsuit filed by a man on November 21, 2014, in Jefferson County District Court,Texas under case number A-196444. The suit was filed against Risperdal manufacturer Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary.
According to the suit, the man was prescribed Risperdal at the age of 7 to treat his ADHD, a condition that Risperdal has never been FDA-approved to treat. In addition to being prescribed a drug that was not FDA approved for his condition, Risperdal was also not approved by the FDA for children at the time that the plaintiff was allegedly prescribed it. The complaint describes how Janssen rigorously marketed the drug “off-label” for children suffering from ADHD which resulted in great profit and many “off-label” prescriptions to children.
The plaintiff, in this case, claims that after taking Risperdal he developed gynecomastia (male breast tissue growth) and several long-lasting emotional problems which he alleges were caused by his use of the drug. Gynecomastia is usually caused by a hormone imbalance. Risperdal has reportedly been found to increase the level of a hormone in the body called prolactin, which stimulates the production of breast milk and breast growth. While breast tissue growth in males is generally benign and not a serious medical problem, it can often cause great embarrassment and emotional strain on the individual. If the condition is serious, surgery may be necessary to cure it.
Several lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of the drug alleging that male plaintiffs who have taken Risperdal have also developed gynecomastia and suffered injuries related to the condition. Currently, there are over 1,000 lawsuits filed against manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals which similarly allege that the company failed to provide consumers with adequate warnings regarding the potential side effect of gynecomastia for those taking the drug. Some lawsuits have been settled, while others have been consolidated in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas in order to streamline the litigation process.
As the many plaintiffs involved await their day in court, the attorneys of Banville Law are working to ensure that anyone who has taken Risperdal and who has suffered from adverse effects that they attribute to their use of the drug will be given the opportunity to evaluate their legal rights. Those individuals may be entitled to significant compensation.
