The Sri Chinmoy 22nd Annual Self-Transcendence 3,100 Mile Race is pleased to announce the final results of this year’s race. The race is the longest certified footrace in the world, attracting athletes from around the globe who desire to overcome the intimidating distance, transcend their own capacity, participate in a great adventure, and gain spiritual insight, as they set new records. The participants’ goal is to accomplish the length of the ultramarathon, 3,100 miles, in only 52 days, which is on average nearly 60 miles a day. The run begins each day at 6 am, with the course closing at midnight.
Sri Chinmoy (1931 – 2007) founded the race in 1997 after dedicating his life to fostering peace in a variety of ways, including through sports. He realized that running gave everyone an accessible opportunity to challenge themselves and achieve self-transcendence. Chinmoy fully believed athleticism and physicality were helpful in the journey to enlightenment and that everyone was capable of accomplishing greater feats than they thought possible.
A visit to Chinmoy’s legacy offers insight into the Spiritual Leader, Sri Chinmoy behind the challenging 3,100-mile footrace. This year’s participants faced unusually hot and humid days. The top six runners logged a completion time under the 52-day goal. Finishing first, in under 45 days, was Vasu Duzhiy from St. Petersburg, Russia, age 52. Placing second was Kobi Oren, age 46, of Kiryat Tivon, Israel, who completed the race in just over 46 days. In third position was Ushika Muckenhumer of Salzburg, Austria, whose time was just over 50 days in length. Remarkably, three runners finished on the last day of the cutoff this year. From Vienna, Austria, Surasa Mairer, 59, finished fourth, with a time of 51 days, 12 hours. She was followed closely by Sopan Tsekov (age 37 from Sofia, Bulgaria) who finished fifth in 51 days, 16 hours, with Kaneenika Janakova (age 48 from Bratislava, Slovakia) in sixth position at 51 days, 17 hours.
“Self-transcendence gives us joy in boundless measure. When we transcend ourselves, we do not compete with others. We do not compete with the rest of the world, but at every moment we compete with ourselves.” – Sri Chinmoy
