The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists (www.CanadianHair.ca), a Toronto-based organization offering hair loss treatment for over 25 years, is weighing in on research published in the Journal of Oncology that reveals that certain male pattern baldness may indicate a risk for developing prostate cancer.

According to the research conducted by scientists at the National Cancer Registry at the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), going bald from the front may indicate a risk for prostate cancer. “The findings of this study give patients an invaluable tool in the fight against prostate cancer,” says Ken Robson, founder of the Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists. “If a patient notices that the baldness is starting from the front, they should get tested for prostate cancer, in addition to undergoing a hair loss treatment.”

If detected early, prostate cancer can be treated. Other risk factors for this type of cancer include a family history, aging and a poor diet. Even if no male relatives have ever had prostate cancer, female relatives with a history of ovarian cancer could signify a potential risk.

It is recommended that men over the age of 50 undergo annual screening for prostate cancer. If male pattern baldness is developing from the front, it is especially important according to the results of this study.

“There are a number of reasons for hair loss in men,” says Robson. “As this study proves, depending on how baldness develops, it may indicate an increased risk for prostate cancer. We tell our patients to look at their family history as well.”
