The Colorado Symphony Announces Increased Education Opportunities and New Platform Called “musicurious”

Denver, United States – September 22, 2015 /MarketersMedia/

The Colorado Symphony introduced a wide array of 2015/16 education opportunities via an expanded education platform called musicurious.

The Colorado Symphony’s musicurious program promotes experiential learning for all ages, acknowledging that discovery and learning happens at every stage of life.

Musicurious includes Petite Musique orchestra performances for the very young, MathNotes and Music of Life which are curriculum based performances for ages 8-10, composition based residency programs for middle and high school students, education initiatives for adults and seniors, sensory-friendly programming, and more.

“Everyone is a musician at heart,” says Colorado Symphony Director of Community Education Programs Catherine Beeson “which is why the goal of musicurious is to create broader end-to-end engagement to cover all age groups, abilities, backgrounds, and needs.”

Music education is not only important to aspiring musicians. Research suggests that studying music can have significant positive impacts on a person’s ability to learn in general. The below studies support the overall learning benefit of music education:

Boston Children’s Hospital has found a correlation between musical training and improved executive function, which is classified as high-level cognitive processes that enable people to quickly process and retain information, regulate their behaviors, make good choices, solve problems, adjust to changing mental demands, and have cognitive flexibility to adjust to novel or changing tasks on demand, in both children and adults.

A study reported in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2014 found that musicians have enhanced nervous system function by focusing attention on meaningful acoustic cues which enhance language and cognitive abilities. The study found that children who participated in the researchers’ community music lessons for two years showed gains in neural processing.

The Colorado Symphony is proud of the willingness and excitement of our musicians and staff to participate in educational programs as a way to give back to the community.

“It’s important to pay it forward,” says Colorado Symphony violinist Ben Odhner. “We go to these schools where students might not have other means to be exposed to this sort of art, and it’s important that they have a way to experience it.”
