The Facts and Risks of Pet Obesity

March 14, 2017 – – The Pet Spa at Soap.Club, supplier of premium quality natural pet shampoo, based out of Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, addresses the steady increase in pet obesity and the health risk concerns thereof.

The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) estimates that 59% of cats and 54% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese. Research is based on an obesity prevalence survey conducted annually by the APOP. Being overweight can cause arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, certain cancers, heart and respiratory disease, and other problems for pets.

Jack Widmer manager of the Pet Spa at Soap.Club says that, “Obesity shortens the lives of our beloved companions, as much as two years in the case of dogs.” Mr. Widmer applauds the efforts of the APOP to promote pet owner awareness in the fight to reduce pet obesity. Often there is a normalization of obesity by pet owners known as the ‘fat pet gap’. “Fighting obesity begins with the pet parent recognizing that there is a problem with a particular pet. Once diagnosed, there are several options available to support healthy and safe weight reduction. Among those are regular exercise and prescribing scientifically formulated nutritional products.” says Widmer.

Mr. Widmer recommends laying-out and executing a habitual health regime for pets. “All pet owners should consider putting a Health Management System in place for each pet based on their individual and specific needs,” he says. “Proper grooming and bathing should always be incorporated into that system.” Many pet lovers prefer to use natural grooming products for their best friends. “The Soap.Club Hypoallergenic Pet Shampoo and Conditioner contains antioxidants that fight off free radicals, and promote healthier, firmer, and more moisturized skin. This makes it a logical component for inclusion in any pet health management system,” according to Widmer.

There are a number of websites that offer advice on the causes, treatment and prevention of pet obesity. As well, weight loss tools can be found online to assist pet owners in managing their pet’s weight issues. Pet Obesity Awareness Day 2017 is on Sunday, October 8, 2017.
