Quite often people who want to make a major life change include a name change as part of that effort.

A recent and quite famous name change is Bruce Jenner. The athlete and TV star transitioned to a woman and filed for a name change and become Caitlyn Jenner.

“That’s a pretty common reason for a name change,” said Arash Hashemi, an attorney in L.A. who offers assistance with legal name changes. “Some people want a more masculine name to go with a male gender. Some want a more feminine name for a female gender. Some people want a gender-neutral name.”

Some people want to change their name to better reflect a different identify that has nothing to do with gender. Rachel Dolezal, a professor from Washington State, changed her name to Nkechi Amare Diallo, a African name meaning “Gift of God.”

Mr. Hashemi said that is a less common reason for a name change, but it still happens.

Another reason for a name change is to put the past away. Jeff Gillooly became Jeff Stone in the aftermath of the attack on Olympic skater Nancy Kerrigan. Stone was convicted in the attack and briefly went to prison.

“The man made a mistake. He paid his debt to society. He wanted to move on and felt a name change would help him get on with the rest of his life,” Mr. Hashemi said.

The reason for a name change is less important that the person who wants the name change, the attorney said.

“Really it is your name. The only reason you need to change it is because you want to. You do not have to keep the name you were assigned at birth,” he said.
