The Sanctuary Sponsors Courageous Initiative to Provide Micro-Housing to Homeless in Kodak, Tennessee

Homelessness is a condition that affects almost 3.5 million Americans, including almost 1.6 million children. There is hardly a community in the country that isn’t touched by this tragic epidemic, but there are few resources available to these desperate families. In Kodak, TN, a church-based group called the Sanctuary felt they were called to help the homeless in their community. The Sanctuary has initiated a project to purchase land and build micro-houses which can shelter a family at minimal cost.

This ambitious project will help up to 20 families at a time, allowing them to get off the streets and obtain some breathing room to find work. These micro-homes offer beds, bathroom, and kitchenette for a small family. With proper shelter for themselves and their children, parents can devote their time to getting jobs, attending school or obtaining governmental aid. This short term housing is the stepping stone that these families need to get back on their feet and become self-sufficient once again.

The Sanctuary plans to use financial donations, donated materials and volunteer labor to build these micro-homes. Each 200 to 800 square foot home would typically require $10,000 to $20,000 to build, but with aid from supporters, this may be dramatically diminished. To help make this project a reality, The Sanctuary has sponsored a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to raise $200,000. These funds will be used to purchase land and secure grants to build the micro-houses. In return for your generous donations, you may receive rewards like a Sanctuary T-shirt, micro-house construction plans, a tour of the housing campus, or naming rights to a micro-house.
