The Unique Group (www.TheUniqueGroup.com), a company offering one-stop brand packaging solutions, is weighing in on a study that shows consumers prefer printed labels on GMO food products.

The Mellman Group recently conducted a poll to determine whether consumers preferred printed labels on their GMO food products or bar codes that can be scanned by a smartphone. The overwhelming majority of those polled, approximately 88%, said they would rather have printed labels. “Based on the results of this study, it shows just how serious people have become about their health and what they put into their bodies,” says Asher Lichtman, VP Sales and Marketing at The Unique Group. “It also demonstrates how big of a role labelling can play in the mind of a consumer and how important it is for transparency when it comes to food labelling.”

The poll also showed that 77% would “strongly favour” printed labelling over barcodes, meanwhile a staggering 89% of consumers support mandatory GMO labelling overall. The study consisted of 800 participants was conducted over the phone in November 2015.

“We are definitely getting a clear sense of what the general population wants to see from the food brands that they purchase,” Lichtman continues. “People generally want to be more informed about everything, and food is no exception. It isn’t surprising that consumers want to know the source of the food they are purchasing.”

Only 6% of those polled said that they were against GMO labelling, meanwhile the same percentage said that they are neither in favour nor opposition to the labelling.

Lichtman says The Unique Group regularly partners with brands to design custom printed labels and packaging, which includes food and beverage packaging. “We base our business on the fact that labelling is a crucial part to building a successful brand. And with the success we’ve had working with large international corporations, we are confident that most consumers feel the same way.”
