VICE News released a television segment on how passengers who have emotional support animals are legally flying with their pets. The interviewer from VICE News in the segment, Nellie Bowles, went to the San Francisco International Airport to find our more and speak with travelers.

Being one of the busiest airports in the United States, there were plenty of passengers that Nellie was able to speak to about traveling experience with pets. During one of her interviews, a passenger mentioned she had heard that a duck had been classified as an emotional support animal in the past, which generated a great deal of social media attention online. The passenger then went out to explain that her shorthaired, 10-pound dog travels with her everywhere and other travelers often stop to say hello and pet her furry companion.

The star of the short segment on VICE News was undoubtedly the emotional support pig named LiLu. LiLu is a two-year-old pig and local Instagram star. She is San Francisco International Airport’s very first accredited therapy pig and was dressed in a pink tutu as travelers were stopping to pet her.

One traveler mentioned in an interview “I have been stressed out with school”. Nellie, reply “Did the pig help with stress?” only to receive a quick response from the student “Yes!”. The student seemed to have no doubt in her mind that the pig had a positive effect on her mood that day.

Because studies do show that pets can reduce stress in humans, SFO goes as far as bringing in animals that are not traveling just to help sooth passengers during their journeys. Backed not only by numerous scientific studies, the smiles on the traveler’s faces within SFO as they interacted with LiLu the pig really told the story of how the bond between animals and humans can help calm and reduce anxiety – especially during high stress situations like navigating through a crowed airport during the holiday season.
