United Continental tumbled 1.13% to close at $70.71 in Tuesday’s trading session. The stock traded between $68.36 and $70.71 on a very heavy volume of 17.7 million shares traded. The obvious reason for the decline is the recent “Passenger Dragging” viral video, which caused an early fall in the stock price. Later in the day it recovered, although at one point the company is reported to have lost $1 billion in stock value.
The future potential losses may start to pile up though, as the incident was actively followed on Chinese social media, where Chinese passenger traffic is the 2nd largest source of revenue for the company. Adding fuel to the fire, the Wall Street Journal reported that the passenger removed from the plane had stated he was chosen for removal because of his race.

American Airlines leaped 3.80% to close at $43.93 in Tuesday’s trading session. The stock traded between $42.41 and $43.95 on volume of 9.7 million shares traded. The blowback from the United incident will likely give American Airlines a nice financial tailwind for some time.
In air traffic news, the company reported its traffic results for the month of March. Based on available first quarter traffic data, the company expects the measurement of total revenue projected from its “available seat mile” numbers to rise between 2 and 4 percent year-over-year for the first quarter of 2017. Other traffic metrics were down: total revenue passenger miles declined 1.2% compared to March 2016 traffic data, and total capacity fell 0.9% when compared to March 2016.
