In New York City alone, overdose deaths rose to 1,444 in 2018, which is an 80.5% increase since 2014, according to the most recent report released by the Department of Health in NYC. And these numbers are only expected to rise in light of the economic hardships posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

When asked for a comment, Bienenfeld stated, “America’s long-lasting drug problem has once again reared its ugly head in recent years, largely due to the increased use of opioids. While drug overdoses have been by and large on the rise, so have drug-related arrests in both America and New York City.”

In fact, according to NYC Health’s report, fentanyl – which is an extremely potent opioid – is involved in nearly half of all deaths as a result of overdose in New York City. Overall, opioids are involved in over 80% of overdose-related deaths citywide.

“The onset of the opioid crisis in New York City happened so suddenly, testing the limits of the legal system in the process. Because of this, there’s a need for seasoned criminal defense attorneys who know the ins and outs of the existing judicial system and can keep up to date with the evolving situation,” he commented.

Bienenfeld further mentioned that regulations to curb the effects of the opioid epidemic are currently in the works in New York State.

However, New York’s drug problem shows no sign of letting up in the near future. Mortality rates resulting from drug-related deaths are expected to increase 332% by 2025 in New York State, as per CDC projections.

“America’s drug problem is far from over and will be something that we’ll face for some time to come. While there have been and will continue to be citywide prevention and treatment efforts, it’s unclear how long the current drug crisis will continue. In the interim, we will continue doing what we can to help our clients also fight the opioid crisis within the justice system,” he said.
