There is a social stigma attached to being charged with a sex crime, and that can play out in many ways even before a suspect’s initial thoughts of trying to get the charges dismissed.

La Rue said “Anyone charged with a sex crime should seriously consider consulting an experienced defense lawyer upon first hearing of the accusations.”

He explained that such crimes carry potentially heavy sentences and fines, all the more if they involve sex trafficking, where children are involved, possession and distribution of child pornography, and/or sexual assault.

“In today’s world, sex crimes are considered different or more disturbing than other crimes by their very nature and are bracketed by the public, especially if it involves a child,” La Rue commented.

He went on to say “There is a more heightened awareness about sex crimes, as there is a greater tendency to presume guilt before the crime ever gets to court, let alone in front of a judge.”

“That, in turn, raises the seriousness of a sex crime accusation in the way they should be managed, investigated, prosecuted, and how it will impact a victim.”

He said “Those convicted of sex crimes could face many consequences beyond jail time, from losing their jobs, families and friends, their standing in the community and reputation, to difficulty in renting or leasing a house, and having to face up to the impact of being a registered sex offender.”

La Rue commented: “Sex crimes will be investigated thoroughly and the outcomes more aggressively pursued because that is what the public wants and desires.”

He added a greater burden on a defense attorney to work harder in establishing a burden of proof and actual innocence. “Sex crimes are different to other criminal charges and require more specialized criminal trial attorneys as a result of the unique challenges inherent in the defense of those accused of such crimes.”
