According to Fantini, some hernia repair operations involving mesh are proving to be problematic as materials used in more recent years have led to an increase in surgery failure rates.
When asked to comment, he said, “As many as one-third of hernia mesh surgeries could result in complications. Some people might not be aware of the complications associated with a failed mesh so I think it’s important to cover things to be on the lookout for.”
Three of the most common symptoms of hernia mesh failure that Fantini mentioned are extreme pain, infections and suffering a recurrent hernia.
“Any pain or discomfort after a hernia surgery could also have bruising or swelling. For less severe cases, pain and discomfort could simply manifest as tenderness,” he said.
One easily identifiable complication of hernia mesh surgeries is chronic infections, the most severe of which will be red and emit heat from the area where the hernia was repaired.
“Another possible sign of infection is something called a seroma, which is when fluids build up and potentially secret where the hernia mesh was inserted,” he said.
According to Attorney Fantini, hernia mesh recipients are also experiencing an extremely high rate of hernia recurrence despite receiving a hernia mesh implant.
Due to a relatively high risk of complications following a hernia mesh implant, the US Food and Drug Administration has recalled certain mesh devices.
According to Fantini, hernia mesh lawsuits claim mesh manufactured by C.R. Bard, Covidien, Johnson & Johnson, and Atrium Medical Corp. failed and led to serious injuries. The largest hernia mesh lawsuit settlement amount to date is $184 million paid by C.R. Bard to settle roughly 3,000 cases in 2011.
When asked to comment about if someone may have a case, Fantini said, “You may be eligible to file a hernia mesh lawsuit if you had hernia mesh surgery and experienced serious complications, and were required to undergo an additional surgical procedure.”
“So if you’re experiencing any complications above following a hernia mesh surgery, you should contact an experienced mass tort law firm like ours who can find out if you could receive compensation for a faulty implant,” he said.
