Toxic Drywall Still A Problem In Florida
Home Check Inspections warns home buyers about the hazards of toxic drywall imported from China. Contrary to popular belief, all homes with this defective drywall have not been remediated.
Riverview FL – April 6, 2018 —
Home Check Inspections recently inspected a house in Tampa that had toxic drywall commonly referred to as “Chinese drywall.”. Many have assumed that all homes with this defective drywall have been remediated, but that is a false assumption. There are still a number of homes with toxic drywall in Florida.
Chinese drywall was used to build over 100,000 homes in 20 different states. This drywall is contaminated with strontium sulfide which is a harmful compound found in coal-fired power plants. In hot and humid environments, strontium sulfide off-gases into hydrogen sulfide, carbon disulfide, and carbonyl sulfide. These sulfide gases can have a negative impact on the health of the people living in the home. People affected by Chinese drywall report having headaches, nose bleeds, sore throats, irritated eyes and skin, heavy breathing, recurring coughs, sinus infections and asthma attacks.
Cristhian Perez, a licensed home inspector with Home Check Inspections, says that there are signs home inspectors look for when a house is suspected to have Chinese drywall. Some of those signs include blackening of copper electrical wiring, blackening of A/C evaporator coils, a “rotten egg” smell in the home, and Chinese markings printed on the back of the drywall.
Homes with this type of drywall have to be remediated by a professional contractor. There are specific guidelines for remediation provided by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC). Remediating a house with Chinese drywall can be expensive. The cost to properly remediate a house is often as much as the cost of the house itself.
