Trapped in addiction: Lebogang is finally free from one of South Africa’s dangerous drug

In a country where over 15% of youth have experimented with drugs, Lebogang’s story offers hope. After battling Nyaope addiction for over a decade, he recently graduated from the Narconon program and is ready to start a new life, free from addiction.

Lebohang, who has been battling heavy drugs like Nyaope for over a decade recently graduated from the Narconon  programme and is ready to start a new life. 

Lebogang’s journey was marked by over a decade of struggle with drug addiction. His path was riddled with attempts to find recovery through countless rehabilitation centers, with none providing lasting success. “The other rehabs, they just medicated me,” Lebogang recalls. “I felt like I was just trading one dependency for another. But at Narconon, it was different.”

Lebogang’s addiction history was extensive, spanning substances from Nyaope to various other hard drugs. Despite numerous interventions and repeated rehabilitation efforts, he found himself caught in an unending cycle of relapse and despair. “I thought I was beyond saving,” he admits. “But Narconon Africa showed me that real recovery is possible.”

What distinguished Narconon Africa for Lebogang was its innovative drug-free withdrawal process. “It was a game-changer,” he emphasizes. “For the first time, I was able to withdraw from drugs without being pumped full of medication. I felt more in control, more human.”

Beyond physical detoxification, Narconon Africa’s program focuses on addressing the root causes of addiction. Through comprehensive life skills training from L. Ron Hubbard. Participants like Lebogang learn effective communication, conflict resolution, and personal development strategies that support long-term recovery.

Lebogang’s story is not unique. South Africa faces a growing drug epidemic, with substance abuse rates among the youth reaching alarming levels. According to the South African Community Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (SACENDU), drug-related crimes have surged by over 15% in the last five years. Nyaope, methamphetamine (tik), and cannabis remain the most commonly abused substances among young people. The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) reports that drug abuse contributes to approximately 60% of all crime-related incidents in the country, and over 15% of South African youth have experimented with drugs, with many trapped in cycles of addiction and limited access to effective rehabilitation services.

 “The key to sustainable recovery lies not just in detoxifying the body but in equipping individuals with life skills that empower them to navigate daily challenges without resorting to substances,” said a Narconon Africa representative. 

Today, Lebogang serves as a dedicated volunteer at Narconon Africa, using his personal experience to inspire and support others battling addiction. “Seeing others break free from the grip of addiction, just like I did, is incredibly rewarding,” he says. “I’m grateful to Narconon Africa for giving me my life back.” His work extends beyond the center, as he actively engages with communities to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, conducts educational workshops, and advocates for preventive measures in schools and youth organizations.
