Triclosan is an antibacterial agent similar to triclocarban. It is found in many consumer products, which are toothpaste, disinfectants, hand sanitizers, toilet cleaners, soaps, detergents, and toys. It first gained prominence in hospitals as a sanitizer and has since stayed in the consumer’s mind. Although research is being conducted on its use as an efficient anti-bacterial agent, its effect on the environment and hormone system are being questioned.

Triclosan is an aromatic solid with a white color. It is grouped as a polychloro phenoxyl phenol, and has a position as an ester and a phenol. It is soluble in methanol, ethanol, and diethyl ether. This compound reduces the bacterial consumption when compared to plain soap. Even consumers using toothpaste filled with triclosan have reduced cavities in the long run.
But huge quantities of triclosan produced at manufacturing plants are dumped in the sewers. But this mixture destroys the naturally-growing algae in the region. This had led to several states in the US and countries to impose a ban on the product. Although getting a clean chit from the FDA (Food & Drug Administration, USA), companies have heed the consumers advice and created a triclosan-free product.
Triclosan is finding increased use in specialty biocides, which specialize in killing microbes. It is used as a preservative in paints. It finds favor in Asia Pacific and Middle East and has remained a part of commercial applications.
