UK Hot Tub Manufacturer Set to Benefit from China Shipping Crisis
UK hot tub manufacturer, Build A Spa, reports that Chinese supply chain issues are helping its business
February 9, 2021 / / —
Build A Spa, a UK hot manufacturer based in the Northeast of England, reports that the China shipping crisis combined with Brexit border issues is helping its business. The brand, which is committed to using only UK-made components, says that the current supply chain issues are putting it in an envious position in relation to its rivals, despite difficult economic conditions.
The firm was well-prepared long before the dual Brexit and coronavirus crises hit the industry, according to business development manager, Paul Richards.
“Build A Spa”, he says, “recognised the problem with Chinese manufacturing in our industry long before the latest squeeze on shipping routes.”
“Cheap materials, poor quality finish, and unsafe manufacturing practices, high errors rates and long lead times,” contributed to the company’s decision to build its hot tubs in the UK. “We took the view from day one,” Richards recalls, “that these costs outweighed any of the benefits of off-shore manufacturing.”
“It’s not the easy ways,” he continues, “and it probably isn’t the cheapest, but the result is genuine British-made hot tubs that we can deliver to customers in a reasonable time frame.”
Currently, many firms in the industry are struggling to accommodate disruptions to global shipping. Difficulties started in February 2020 when China closed many of its parts-producing factories in response to the pandemic. Problems then got worse on 1st January 2021 when Brexit chaos engulfed British ports.
However, Build A Spa’s business model allowed the brand to effectively side-step both of these issues. Over the last twelve months, it has been able to enjoy its robust UK supply chain while its competitors have struggled to continue making deliveries.
The company is proud of its approach to hot tub manufacturing. “We take ownership of manufacturing,” Richards says, “rather than it happening in some remote factory in the Far East.” It allows the firm to “guarantee the product that reaches customers is made to exacting standards.”
Currently, Build A Spa offers several lines of customisable hot tubes, including The Nemesis, The Zeus and The Zeus Deluxe. The tubs feature adjustable hydrotherapy jets, touch control panels, LED lighting and a choice of acrylic shell colours. Some lines also offer waterfalls and fountains.
