Unstable E-Cigarette Batteries Are Likely Source Of Many Explosions, As E-Cig Explosion Lawsuit Cases Increase

June 28, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on new information regarding lithium-ion batteries and their possible link to exploding electronic cigarettes. Live Science recently published an article that outlines how such explosions might occur. According to this source, lithium-ion batteries can overheat. When this happens, there is a potential for a cascade or “domino effect” to occur. Mounting levels of heat compound within a battery module until the battery explodes. Moreover, this reaction can occur within milliseconds, leaving consumers with almost no time to react. According to the article, since the year 2002, lithium-ion batteries have been the subject of 43 product recalls.

However, the manufacturers of electronic cigarettes, or e-cigs, use the batteries because they are both compact and long-lasting as a power source. Since their introduction, e-cigs have increased in popularity as an alternative to smoking, now including more than two million American consumers. Several dozen officially documented reported incidents of e-cig explosions are currently on record, but some sources feel that the actual number may be larger due to underreporting.

With consequences that include fires, burns, blindness, and lasting psychological trauma, these incidents can dissuade consumers from using these products. One man from Sherman, Texas reported that the device exploded in his hand and was projected across the room. He suffered manual burns and now has a disinclination to use e-cigarette products in the future. While they are often purchased in an attempt to improve health or adhere to changing social mores, FEMA analysts note that there are many incidents that are likely “not reported” to local fire departments or the media.

Also at issue is the FDA’s lack of oversight in these cases. While reports of exploding electronic cigarettes have come from the states of Utah, Oklahoma, New York, Texas, California, Arizona, and much more the FDA cannot legally interfere with the production, quality testing, or distribution of these products. However, the recent expansion of their purview to include tobacco products has spurred concerned parties within the government regulatory agency to push for oversight of tobacco alternatives, such as e-cigs.
